But what’s also nuts is that the story of Lennay Kekua—the dead girl who never lived—is a bigger deal (3.1 million-plus views on Deadspin and counting) than the story of Lizzy Seeberg, whose real life ended in real tragedy (44K for this Deadspin post).

As Dave Zirin reports, Notre Dame has already scheduled press conferences and hired an outside investigator to deal with the Te’o situation, two things that never happened for Seeberg. Seriously. The amount of attention that Notre Dame is putting into this — including hiring an outside investigator — when they can’t manage to even pretend to give a shit about a real live woman who committed suicide after allegedly being assaulted by a ND athlete — and who was then alternately bullied and vilified by other athletes and students, and shrugged off by administrators and authorities — is gross. And that’s just one of many stories like that. As a friend said yesterday, “I’m glad my religious-founded college isn’t so creepy and cultlike.” Amen.

I suggest a little more fairness to ND. The media cares about Manti Te’o and whatever bullshit is going on. ND always cares about its students’ behavior and character, including the case of Lizzy Seeberg. The loss of Lizzy Seeberg’s life is a tragedy, but the facts do not support wrongdoing on the part of the University. And a broader look at ND’s disciplinary system in cases involving student athletes is far from suggesting that the University gives preferential treatment (unlike many colleges playing at the same level).

Let the Time Capsule Diggup Begin!

Today is the big diggup. 10 years (and a few months) ago, upon graduation from High School, my close girlfriends and I buried a box. A time capsule, hoorah! We put things that mattered to us in the box, answered questions about who would do what first, put items that represented the time (e.g., I’m pretty sure I have some Arnette sunglasses in there, ha), and buried them in the backyard of the parents we thought most unlikely to move. It turned out three of the five of us did move, so we thought well (or with luck).

Tonight we will dig it up— hopefully before it gets too dark as I’m not so confident we marked it expertly.

One girlfriend is in town from NYC for a wedding, so we must do it this very Carmageddon weekend! I will leave work early for once, get some beer and some corn, and let the party begin. Everyone is bringing husband/bf/fiance but my guy is in KC. All is well though when I have FaceTime! Got you, world.

I’m hopeful we asked more questions than I can remember doing in a circle with separate pens and papers so that no one could influence another’s answers. I mostly remember the who will get married first question which seems a little boring right now, but I’m sure hilarity will ensue based upon my mental state 10 years ago.

So, hooray, today is the day!

Have you heard of Pret A Manger? They make natural food by hand and donate unsold food to charities at the end of the day. They started in London and have made their way to New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C., so today was the last day I’ll ever eat them! I had a crazy filling roast beef, arugula, and parmesan baguette, but I was so distracted by the iPhone 5 announcement that I didn’t take a picture :-(

What can I say? That speech blew me away. Clinton is articulate— made sound arguments, talked fact, and pointed out a major weakness of the Romney campaign. What is Romney’s fiscal plan, anyway?

I am impressed…and worried.

The people are hurting. But we hurt because the economy is crap. We hurt because healthcare is absurd. We hurt because government is big and inefficient.

Let’s talk about how it costs a small business $30,000 to insure a 60 YO and his family. Let’s talk about how adding people to the system doesn’t decrease cost. Let’s talk about healthcare costs in the US as compared to the rest of the world, or say, Europe. Let’s talk about adding regulation to businesses related to their healthcare spending, and what that does to small businesses and their ability to hire and flourish.

The people need government to cut the tax loopholes generated by select big businesses and their relationships. To cut the tax loopholes that allow many individuals to pay no taxes— many individuals who are middle class. The people need government to allow interstate competition among health insurance carriers. To allow markets to put pressure on carriers not to simply cover everything and increase premiums to compensate, and to incentivize groups big and small to take care. To not rely solely on big pools of persons but to rely on the improvement of the present health of all Americans.

Let’s talk about integrity— integrity means telling the truth.

So tell the truth, so-called leaders.
